European Mile in Bulgaria supports STOP CANCER charity
More than 350 people took part in BG Be Active’s flagship European Mile event in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, to support the STOP CANCER charity and cause. At the rowing channel in Plovdiv, children and adults gathered at the event to cover the distance of 1 mile (1.6 m), the minimum daily movement one needs to maintain a healthy condition. Six Plovdiv footballers from PFC Botev also ran a mile in support of all the people who have battled or are battling cancer. In addition to the flagship event, BG Be Active also organised 20 smaller events in Plovdiv and in 5 other cities in Bulgaria, including Smolyan, Troyan, Russe, Ezerets, Silistra.
The charity cause of all the events in Bulgaria is STOP CANCER and all the funds raised at the sites will be donated to the Stop Cancer Association to help the children’s oncohaematology clinic in Plovdiv. The campaign events will continue until the end of the year.
Since the start of the campaign in May, BG Be Active has engaged 962 runners in collecting and donating 1831 miles and the events have physically reached more than 17,000 people.
Over 15 organisations supported BG Be Active with logistics and communication. With their help, the association managed to spread the campaign and information about the events as well as the need for more daily movement and its health advantages. Citizens and students were encouraged to share their participation and certificates using the hashtag #FindYourMile.
The European Mile received massive support from the media, which adopted the causes of Stop Cancer and More Daily Movement as their own and wholeheartedly covered and shared the events. With the support of 13 media outlets and the national radio and television BNR and BNT, BG Be Active succeeded in reaching a huge part of the population in the country, amounting to 1.6 million people.
The European Mile events in Bulgaria will continue until end of November and will include activations of students during the European School Sport Day in Bulgaria on 24 September.
