On 11 May, over 50 participants from 30 countries gathered online to learn valuable tips and first-hand experiences in promoting physical activity to children from Daily Mile Founder Elaine Wyllie and JOGG project manager Patty Scholten in the second European Mile webinar hosted by ISCA: How do you get every child to move every day?

The webinar kicked off with introductory warm-up questions for the participants. One of them, “What is the key to getting children active on a daily basis?” was answered overwhelmingly that fun and joy are the most important factors in engaging children to be more physically active.

Elaine Wyllie shared how the Daily Mile began back when she was a head teacher at St Ninian’s Primary School and one revelation came to shock her – the children were not fit. After consulting with the school’s PE teacher, Elaine developed the idea of letting the children run or jog at their own pace for 15 minutes during class time. The results were surprisingly positive after only three to four weeks. In those four weeks, the Daily Mile was born.

Now, the Daily Mile Foundation has spread to 80 countries and more than 3 million children take part in a daily run or jog. “Children are smiling – that is what is all about,” says Elaine Wyllie.

The next keynote speaker, Patty Scholten, spoke about JOGG, an organisation based in the Netherlands which is a national coordinator of the European Mile event as well as a Daily Mile national coordinator.

JOGG aims to create a society in which all children and adolescents can live, learn, work and enjoy themselves in an environment that promotes a healthy lifestyle. JOGG advocates a local approach in which not only parents and health professionals, but also shops, companies, schools and local authorities join hands to ensure that young people remain at a healthy weight.

Today, after five years of the Daily Mile’s launch in the country’s educational institutions, over 100 companies, NGOs, research institutions and public entities have joined forces to make the initiative successful.

The collaboration between ISCA and the Daily Mile Foundation began in March 2021. The two organisations entered into an agreement that for every registered mile that Europeans run, walk or roll in 2021, ISCA will contribute cash donation to the Daily Mile Foundation (up to 10,000 euro). Register your walked, jogged, run or rolled miles here and contribute to the donation to the Daily Mile Foundation for them to get even more children active.
